Twenty-two students and a driver were killed when their bus collided with a truck head-on in northern Nigeria's Bauchi-Kano road, an official said Tuesday.

Three others sustained serious injuries, said Kabir Ibrahim-Daura, spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps in Kano State.

"Of the 22 students, 12 are males while the remaining 10 are females," he said.

Nigeria is among countries with high death rates in traffic accidents, mainly due to careless driving, poor conditions of some roads or vehicles used in public transportation.
