Japan's auto giant Toyota Motor Corporation announced Tuesday that it will launch its hydrogen fuel cell vehicle (FCV) in Japan on Dec. 15, with the sales target of approximately 400 units in Japan by the end of 2015.

The hydrogen-powered vehicle "Mirai," which means future in Japanese, will go on sale with a price tag of 7.236 million yen ( about 62,379 U.S. dollars), according to a release posted Tuesday on the website of the company.

The Mirai can travel 300 miles (about 500 km) on a single tank of hydrogen and be refueled in less than five minutes, and emits only water vapor, said the company.

To promote wider use of FCVs, the government announced the same day that it would offer subsidies to those who purchase the vehicle.
