Japanese auto giant Nissan will build its first car assembly plant in Myanmar this year, according to Nissan's statement Thursday.

Nissan will set up its plant in Bago, 80 kilometers northeast of commercial hub Yangon and it is expected to have an annual production capacity of 10,000 vehicles with about 300 employees, the statement said.

The automaker expects to sell more than 1,000 units in three years.

Nissan began selling cars in Myanmar in 2013.

Japan's Suzuki launched its production plant in Myanmar last year while U.S. giant Ford Motor has opened a showroom in Yangon.
