A 26-year-old Fijian mother has been charged with two counts of manslaughter arising from negligence and duty of care of parents for the deaths of her two children in Taveuni, Fiji.

This is Fiji's first case of parental negligence.

The fire incident that occurred on November last year claimed the lives of a two-year-old boy and his five-year-old sister.

The accused has been bailed for the sum of 500 Fiji dollars ( about 262 U.S. dollars) by the Taveuni Magistrates Court and will appear at the Labasa High Court on August 2.

Fiji Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the parents and guardians are once again advised to take better care of their children as the case is before the courts.

Naisoro also said the Fiji Police will pursue charges of parental negligence of cases in which children are victims.

The Criminal Investigations Department is investigating other similar cases that have been ordered to explore the line of parental negligence, according to reports of the stateowned radio Fiji Broadcasting Corporation on Thursday.
