According to the recently released Economist Intelligence Unit’s 2019 Safe Cities index, Tokyo, Singapore and Osaka are the safest cities in the world.
The cities have maintained their high rank while, Hong Kong that was previously at a higher position has dropped to 20th position this year after being on 11th position in 2015 and ninth in 2017.
The indicators to judge a city’s level of safety included access to health care, cybersecurity, infrastructure and personal security indicators. In all 57 indicators were evaluated to reach the conclusions.
In total 60 cities across five continents were ranked. Beijing, Kuala Lumpur and Jakarta were at 31st, 35th and 53rd spots in the rankings.
The report stated, “Our research points to a number of key elements, including joint planning by all relevant stakeholders, both governmental and non-governmental, to prepare for shocks.”
“A new understanding of infrastructure that uses a city’s natural assets as tools to enhance its ability to absorb shocks; and the importance of promoting social connectedness among citizens in creating communities that will work together in a crisis,” it further said.
