At least eight people were killed and "multiple" others wounded in a shooting at a light rail facility in San Jose, California.

Earlier, Sam Liccardo, the Mayor of San Jose said the situation was still being assessed.

"A shooting at the VTA facility on Younger St has left several people being treated, but the situation is still being assessed. The shooter is no longer a threat, and the facility has been evacuated. I will update as more information becomes available," said Liccardo after the incident.

According to CBS, the facility is operated by the VTA, the Santa Clara County transportation agency. The sheriff's department is located nearby.

The facility is a transit control center that stores trains and has a maintenance yard.

Other reports indicate that the shooting occurred during a union meeting.

The AP reports that special agents from the FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were responding to the crime scene.
