An Indian aid worker was abducted Monday by unknown gunmen in Afghanistan's western Herat province, said local media reports.

The Indian was working with an NGO in Kabul and he was abducted when visiting the Herat area to assess the work on a project, according to the reports.

No group has so far claimed responsibility for the incident, which came 10 days after the Indian consulate in Herat was attacked on May 23 by four heavily armed gunmen.

The gunmen were killed by security personnel at the consulate.

The Ministry of External Affairs is seeking details about the kidnapping, said local TV reports.
