Niu Kecheng's landscape paintings reflect multiple cultural traditions that have inspired him for decades.

He majored in history while attending Peking University, and worked at museums for years to immerse himself in the study of classical Chinese paintings. He later went to Japan to study classical Japanese paintings.

Niu works embody the rich traditions of the blue-and-green genre of classical landscape paintings, the meticulous gongbi brushwork technique and the vibrant color schemes of Japanese art.

Scenery and Color, an exhibition running at the National Art Museum of China through Jan 10, shows Niu's works, have broadened the realm of landscape painting.
