US President Trump has sparked a trade dispute between China and US by imposing tariffs on Chinese goods, which has been a focus at 2018 Asian Boao Forum, which kicked off in Hainan Province on Sunday. Some politicians advocate China's multilateralism on the economy given the US controversial move.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres believes China's commitment to globalization, free trade and international cooperation, and the Belt and Road Initiative, is "the perfect demonstration" for the developing world.

"It's extremely important for us to be able to have fair globalization for the Agenda 2030 to be implemented", noted Guterres, and "leaving no one behind, for the global injustice to be corrected and for the possibility of establishing a community of shared prosperity [that] President Xi Jinping usually mentions".

Zhou Wenzhong, Secretary General of the 2018 Asian Boao Forum says trade protectionism is not sustainable and no country can solve its own problems through trade protection, which has been proved throughout history.

"Donald Trump wants to solve America's problems through trade protectionism", notes Zhou, which is the "wrong solution".

Former Philippine president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo notes that "If we remember 40 years ago when China was just beginning to awaken, many in the Philippines were concerned that China might become a rival for markets. Little then did anybody realize that China is in a class of its own."

"Now, 40 years later, we will see that China is not a rival, it is a partner, it is a market, it is a donor, and it is a source of capital and technology." Arroyo adds.

Xiao Yaqing, Director of China's State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC) says that through decades of reform and opening up, China has offered a wide market to the world. Many of Chinese state-owned enterprises have connections with foreign enterprises with ongoing cooperative projects.

"China's partners have also gained from joint ventures. Many international companies make most of their profits from the Chinese market, thanks to China's reform and opening up." adds Xiao.
