A retired police officer in the U.S. state of West Virginia was killed Wednesday by the police after firing an assault rifle at a courthouse, local media reported.

Mayor Andy McKenzie of Wheeling, W. Virginia, revealed that the gunman was a veteran of local police force for more than 20 years and retired 13 years ago, the reports said.

The gunman's name was not immediately released, neither the cause of the shooting.

One security officer was reportedly wounded by flying debris inside the courthouse as the gunman fired more 20 shots at the three-story federal building from the parking lot. The gunman was killed after security officers and local police opened fire at him.
