Brunei's Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Wednesday inspected the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting Plus Maritime Security and Counter Terrorism (ADMM-Plus MS & CT) Exercise, which is currently being conducted in Brunei.
Haji Hassanal Bolkiah was introduced to the ASEAN Defence Senior Officials’ Meeting (ADSOM)-Plus Leaders and Representatives and then received an exercise briefing delivered by the Exercise Co-Director, Brigadier General Seri Pahlawan Haji Hamzah, Joint Force Commander RBAF, then toured the Maritime Security Task Force Headquarters and Exercise Control centre at the Multinational Coordination Centre (MNCC).

The Sultan also boarded the RBAF S-70i Blackhawk helicopter to fly off to have an aerial view of all the ADMM-Plus naval vessels berthing in the Brunei Waters before landed to witness a ship assault involving the special forces of the ADMM-Plus countries.

Navies of the 10 countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations participate in the drills, along with those from China, the U.S., Russia, Australia, India, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea. The Chinese military sends "Lanzhou" destroyer along with 12 SWAT soldiers and four staff officers to the exercise.

According to Seri Pahlawan Haji Hamzah, a total of 18 warships, 16 helicopters, 2 Maritime Patrol Aircraft, counter terrorism elements and shore based personnel from the participating ADMM-Plus Nations is involved in the exercise.
The ADMM Plus ADMM Plus MS & CT this year is co-hosted by RBAF and Singapore Armed Forces from May 1 to May 12 after the success of the ADMM-Plus Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief and Military Medicine (ADMM Plus HADR & MM) Exercise in 2013.
It is a multilateral exercise which spans from Brunei and all the way to Singapore, aiming to enhance military cooperation and increase interoperability between participating countries in responding to maritime threats.
The participating ADMM-Plus naval vessels will sail from Brunei waters, conduct exercises on the way to Singapore and conclude with a Counter Terrorism scenario in Singapore.
The ADMM-Plus mechanism was proposed and founded by the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting, with the purpose of enhancing the mutual trust and cooperation between ASEAN and relevant countries in the Asian-Pacific region, and jointly responding to transnational non-traditional security challenges.
The multinational joint exercise this time is the first maritime security and anti-terrorism exercise under the framework of the ADMM-PLUS.
