MANILA, Jan. 30 (APD) – Six still unidentified armed men said to be members of the outlawed New People’s Army were killed in a firefight at 6:00 A.M. today in a village in Tinambac town in Camarines Sur.

Police Chief Inspector Malou Calobaquib, PNP Regional Office No. 5 spokesperson said Philippine Army intelligence operatives and other elements encountered more or less 15 armed men. Firefight was reported to have lasted for 20 minutes where the armed men withdrew towards a neighboring village.

The soldiers recovered six remains, four M-16 Armalite rifles and one grenade launcher from the scene.

Meanwhile, still unidentified men threw a grenade at a Kamahaldikaan Mosque in Zamboanga City very early this morning.

AFP Western Mindanao Command said two died while four others were wounded.

The military report said the victims are members of a Tabligh (group of preachers) from nearby Basilan province and have been in the mosque for three days.

Joint Task Force Zamboanga commander Colonel Leonel M. Nicolas said the blast is not in any way connected with what happened in Jolo last Sunday where at least 21 died and over a hundred wounded.

“The (Zamboanga incident) is still under investigation as we assisted and brought the wounded to the nearest government health facility,” Colonel Nicolas was quoted saying.

He appealed to the public not to speculate and spread unverified news in the social media relating to the explosion in Sulu as it will add anxiety to the general public.
