An Egyptian court sentenced one member of the Muslim Brotherhood (MB), from which ousted President Mohamed Morsi hails, to life in prison over violent acts against the army last month, state-run Ahram website reported Tuesday.

Earlier reports said 11 MB members were sentenced to life imprisonment, but it turned out that only one member was sentenced to life in prison, while 48 other Muslim Brotherhood members received sentences from five to 15 years in prison, and 12 people were acquitted.

The suspects were accused of attacking the armed forces, setting three churches ablaze and burning nine armored vehicles that cost 20 million Egyptian pounds (2.86 million U.S. dollars), the report said.

They were also charged with assaulting government institutions, blocking roads, spreading chaos in the port city of Suez, after the security forces' dispersal of pro-Morsi sit-ins in the country on Aug. 14.
