Police arrested a violent armed man, who has been creating panic with firing in the red zone area of Pakistani capital of Islamabad for more than five hours on Thursday night, local official said.

Both the armed man and his wife were injured in the cross fire and are in police custody in a hospital while his children are safe, said senior police superintendent of police Rizwan.

The drop scene of the incident came out when the negotiation between an official and the armed man turned into a scuffle. The armed man started firing and finally police commandos arrested him after injuring him with two shots at his legs.

The injured gunman was quickly shifted to the hospital where emergency and high alert had been declared.

Hospital sources said that at least two police personnel were also brought to the hospital with minor bullet injuries.

The incident started at around 5:30 p.m. (local time) on Thursday evening when a man armed with two automatic guns created panic in the red zone area of Islamabad as he opened fire at police.

According to the reports, the armed man named Muhammad Sikandar, who was riding in a black corolla car along with driver, his wife and two children, tried to enter into the high security zone where important government buildings, including the parliament, presidency and prime minister houses are present.

Police personnel at a check post stopped him, but he tried to runaway in his vehicle. A police mobile then intercepted him, but he started firing at police, followed by aerial firing, leaving no one injured.

Sikandar asked his driver to drive the car towards the parliament, but the driver stopped the car and managed to flee. Police arrested the driver and shifted him to some unknown place.

Police commandos cordoned off him and a high ranked police official tried to negotiate with him and his wife.

The armed man, 51, sent his written demands to police, demanding to end the current government, implement Islamic law in the country and give safe passage to him along with his family.

Police asked him to surrender for any further talks but he denied the offer.

Thousands of people, including hundreds of media people, gathered near the site. Some people, who claimed to know about the armed man, called local TV channels, saying that he is neurotic and an addict of drugs.

The armed man, who came from Hafizabad District of Punjab Province, had been working in Dubai for 25 years. He checked in a hotel located nearby the red zone two days ago, police said.

The driver of the car said Sikandar hired his vehicle from the hotel, bought water bottles and other edibles before heading towards the parliament house.

Police were preparing for commando operation to assassinate the armed man but were prohibited by the federal interior minister, who ordered to arrest him alive while securing children and woman.

The real motive behind this incident has yet to be determined.
