Vietnamese president, top legislator praise ties with Singapore

Vietnamese President Truong Tan Sang and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung respectively met visiting Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Thursday, during which the hosts highly praised bilateral ties over the years.

The Vietnamese president highlighted outcomes of talks between the two Prime Ministers, the most notable of which being the elevation of relationship to the strategic partnership level, at time when the two sides are celebrating their 40th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

On the basis of the newly-launched strategic partnership, bilateral cooperation in various fields including trade and investment, education and culture will develop further, said the president.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese top legislator called for closer links between the two legislatures on the basis of their strategic partnership.

The two legislative bodies should facilitate visits and share information and professional expertise, as well as closely work at regional and global inter-parliamentary forums, especially the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly and the World Parliamentary Union, Hung said.

He also proposed signing a cooperation agreement between the two legislatures and establishing Vietnam-Singapore and Singapore- Vietnam Friendly Parliamentarians' Groups, adding that Singapore is a strategic partner that Vietnam treasures and wishes to push forward bilateral ties with.

For his part, Singapore's Prime Minister Lee applauded the elevation of bilateral ties to a strategic partnership level during his visit, which he said would further boost ties between Vietnam and Singapore in the years ahead.

He also expressed his desire that the two nations will work closely at regional and global forums as well as within the trans- Pacific framework.

Lee paid a three-day official visit to Vietnam, from Wednesday to Friday, at the invitation of his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung, to boost bilateral ties.
