The Polish government adopted a national nuclear power program on Tuesday, the Economy Ministry said in a statement.

The program involves the construction of two 3,000-megawatt nuclear power plants in Poland together with building of a regulatory and organizational framework.

The construction of the first power plant is planned to be completed in 2019 and operational in 2024. The plant's cost could reach between 40 and 60 billion Polish zloty (between 13 and 20 billion U.S. dollars).

The second power plant is planned for 2035.

The ministry said the nuclear power program was designed for building nuclear power plants, add nuclear energy to Poland's energy mix and stimulate economic, social and regional development.

At present, most of Poland's power plants run on coal.
