Thai Foreign Ministry told Thai people living or working in Egypt to stay at home to avoid looming violence stemming from a mass protest and a likely government crackdown.

Deputy Foreign Ministry spokesman Jakkrit Srivali said on Tuesday that violent clashes were sporadic in Egypt and no Thai had been reported wounded.

The official said immediate evacuation of Thai nationals is not needed yet, and no Thai has filed for request to return to Thailand.

There are about 1,800 Thai students currently in Cairo, about 500 Thais running Thai restaurants or working in spa businesses and about 200 Thais married to Egyptian people that live in Cairo.

Hundreds of thousands of Egyptian demonstrators were gathering in Cairo's Tahrir Square as they were calling for the ouster of President Monamed Morsi.
