Asia’s first ‘David Bowie is’ exhibition to open in Tokyo

A well-received exhibition featuring the music, fashion and style of David Bowie will open in Tokyo on Jan. 8, a year after the British superstar died of cancer at the age of 69.

The “David Bowie is” exhibition, organized by The Asahi Shimbun and other organizations, will run until April 9 at the Terada Soko (warehouse) G1 building located in the Tennozu district of the capital’s Shinagawa Ward.

It will be the first showing of the exhibition in Asia.

Media representatives received a preview of the show on Jan. 5.

More than 300 items, including Bowie’s original handwritten lyrics, album artwork and costumes will be showcased.

Visitors can feel immersed in Bowie’s free-spirited inspiration and fertile imagination while listening to his music and interviews with headphones.

A special Japan corner has also been set up for the show. Bowie had a strong connection with Japan throughout his career.

The Victoria and Albert Museum in London started the “David Bowie is” exhibition in 2013. Since then, it has traveled to nine countries, drawing a total of 1.6 million visitors.

The admission fee for the Tokyo exhibition is 2,400 yen ($21) for adults, and 1,200 yen for junior and senior high school students.
