The offbeat musical about teen angst and the tyranny of social media sees a high school boy struggling with the fallout of a fellow student's suicide.

Its music and lyrics were written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, who won an Oscar for City of Stars, their song for hit movie “La La Land.”

Host Kevin Spacey performed on stage during the 2017 Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday in New York City.

Another musical, "Hello, Dolly!," took four awards including best leading actress and best costume design, while Middle East peace accord drama "Oslo" was named the best play.

The Tony Awards, along with the Academy Awards for movies, Grammy Awards for music and Emmy Awards for TV, are considered the four highest honors in the US arts industries.

The 71st Tony Awards ceremony was hosted by "House of Cards" star Kevin Spacey in New York.
