HK's biggest countdown firework show to display on new year eve

The biggest ever countdown extravaganza, organized by Hong Kong tourism promoting institution will be held on the Victoria Harbor on the 2014 New Year’s Eve.

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) announced on Tuesday that it is the first time for the performance to use new fireworks instead of the traditional ones to match pyrotechnics, illumination and music to orchestrate an eight minute long musical.

As introduced by HKTB general manager of Event and Product Development Mason Hung, “The traditional fireworks is more likely as a strip of light and will dissipate as it burns but the new ones can create more than one explosion after shooting and escalate to a higher altitude.

Combined with the pyrotechnics, the show will cover an area higher and wider than previous edition. The backdrop will be one kilometer long, stretching from the middle to the west of the Hong Kong Island. Also, the fireworks and pyrotechnics will be launched at various layers, ranging from 50 meters to 250 meters in height. Audiences can enjoy the fireworks from as near as 150 meters from the Tsim Sha Tsui harbor front, which will move skywards and to the central of the harbor.

Apart of the size of the display, new patters such as Heart- and Smiley-shaped fireworks will be added as new elements and four “shooting stars for wishing will rise every 15 minutes starting from 11:00 p.m. to enhance the festive atmosphere.

Hung suggested that the four optimal viewing spots are “Avenue of Stars, “Far East Finance center, “Central

Piers

and “Golden Bauhinia Square.

Entry to the central Victoria Harbor by vessels will be prohibited from 11:00 pm to 1 am and the Kowloon Public Pier will be closed at 9:30 pm at that night. The Marine Department of the Hong Kong government will patrol the harbor to supervise and prevent boats from entering the marine area for safety reasons.
