Phu Quoc Island, a tourist resort insouthern Vietnamese province of Kien Giang, has been connected with the national power grid after installation of an undersea cable was completed last Saturday, Vietnam News daily reported Tuesday.

Electricity has long been a main obstacle to the island's development. Now with the installation of the submarine cable that links the island to the national power grid, it is believed that the island's development, including tourism, will be boosted.

Phu Quoc Island is Vietnam's largest island and nicknamed " Paradise Pearl Island" due to its natural beauty.

This 574 sq.km heart-shaped island, along with 22 other islands, forms Phu Quoc island district in Kien Giang province, 1,220 km south of the Vietnamese capital Hanoi.

The island features a monsoon tropical climate, with two distinctive seasons, the dry season (from November to April), and the rainy season (from May to October). The average temperature on Phu Quoc is 28 degrees Celsius, allowing visitors to enjoy the island's beauty at any time of the year.

According to a master development plan, by 2020 Phu Quoc Island plans to receive 2-3 million tourists a year, with foreign arrivals making up 40 percent.
