Lippi to retire after leaving position as Chinese national team manager

World Cup-winning manager Marcello Lippi confirmed that he would retire after leaving the manager position of the Chinese national football team.

“When this adventure ends, I will return to Italy and not do it again as a manager,” Lippi said in a interview with Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport.

Lippi also admitted that It would be very difficult for China to enter the 2018 FIFA World Cup, having won only five points from seven matches.

However, Lippi refused to give up and intends to try winning all three remaining matches with his players.

In October 2016, Lippi signed a contract with the Chinese nationals football team which will end in January 2019. After that, China has the option to extend the contract to 2022 when the Qatar FIFA World Cup will be held.

As a legendary manager, Lippi was renowned for leading Italy to win the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He became the manager of Guangzhou Evergrande in 2012 and brought the club its first Asian Football Confederation Champions League title, as well as three Chinese Super League champions.
