South Africa on Friday reported its first two deaths resulting from the novel coronavirus, with the total number of confirmed cases in the country topping 1,000, according to its health ministry.

"This morning, we wake South Africans up with sad news that we now have our first deaths resulting from COVID-19," South African Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said.

The two deaths occurred in Western Cape Province, with one at a private hospital and the other at a public hospital, the minister said.

The country's novel coronavirus cases stood at 927 on Thursday, an increase of 218 from the previous day, which was the biggest rise in a single day since the country reported its first confirmed case on March 5.

To cope with the epidemic, the South African government announced a 21-day national lockdown starting from midnight Thursday.

Under the lockdown, economic activities will nearly grind to a standstill, and most shops will be closed except for pharmacies, laboratories, banks, and essential financial and payment services, including the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, supermarkets, petrol stations and health care providers.

Individuals will not be allowed to leave their homes except under strictly controlled circumstances, such as to seek medical care, buy food, medicine and other supplies or collect a social grant.
