CHONGQING, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Downpours in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality have led to the death of four people and affected more than 140,000 in the area which is located along the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.

By 4 p.m. Monday, about 4,343 people had been evacuated, local flood control authorities said. About 746 houses collapsed and direct economic losses amounted to 243.07 million yuan (about 34 million U.S. dollars).

The third flooding in the Yangtze passed through Chongqing on Monday. As of 6:40 p.m., the water at Cuntan hydrologic station was flowing 1.45 meters above the warning level, but slowly receded as it roared through the city.

The municipal maritime authorities imposed temporary traffic controls in parts of the upper reaches of the Yangtze on Sunday to ensure shipping safety. ■
