BEIJING, April 13 (Xinhua) -- The world is now in a battle against COVID-19, a disease caused by a previously unknown coronavirus that has spread to over 200 countries and regions.

The following are the updates on the contagious disease.

NEW YORK -- The number of COVID-19 cases in the United States topped 550,000 on Sunday afternoon, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University. The fresh figure reached 550,016 with 21,733 deaths as of 5:30 p.m. (2130 GMT), according to the CSSE.

The state of New York recorded 189,020 cases, the most in the country, with a death toll of 9,385. New Jersey reported 61,850 cases and 2,350 fatalities. Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, California, Illinois and Louisiana have each reported over 20,000 cases, according to the tally.

Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno writes in his twitter that"I have arranged a 50% reduction in the monthly income of the President, Vice President, Ministers and Vice Ministers."

QUITO -- Ecuadorian President Lenin Moreno on Sunday announced he and other senior government officials will take a 50 percent pay cut amid the economic crisis sparked by the COVID-19 outbreak and lockdown.

The austerity measure will apply to his vice president and cabinet, as well as members of the National Assembly, and regional and municipal leaders, Moreno said via Twitter.

Ecuador has reported 7,466 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus and 333 deaths.

LONDON -- A total of 10,612 people who were hospitalized in Britain and tested positive for the novel coronavirus have died as of Saturday afternoon, a daily increase of 737, the Department of Health and Social Care said on Sunday.

As of Sunday morning, some 84,279 cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed, said the department, adding that 352,974 tests have concluded, with 18,000 tests on Saturday.

Hours before the update was released, a Downing Street spokesman confirmed that British Prime Minister Boris Johnson "has been discharged from hospital to continue his recovery at Chequers".

DUBLIN -- The Irish government on Sunday marked the Easter Rising, a failed armed insurrection in 1916, without public gatherings, as COVID-19 cases approached 10,000 in the country.

President Michael D. Higgins led a special commemoration marking the 104th anniversary of the Easter Rising at his official residence, according to a statement by the president's office.

The commemoration began with Higgins ringing the Peace Bell, followed by a prayer, a wreath-laying ceremony, and a minute's silence.

PARIS -- As of Sunday, the number of people who have died from the coronavirus in France totalled 14,393, representing a one-day increase of 561, down from Saturday's 643, while serious cases decreased for the fourth straight day.

Daily deaths recorded in hospitals rose by 315 to 9,253 compared with 345 recorded on Saturday and 554 on Friday. Deaths in nursing homes increased by 251 to 5,140 since the epidemic started on March 1, according to the data released by the Health Ministry.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Ministry of Health reported 233 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 2,532.

Of the newly confirmed cases, 66 were linked to other cases while contact tracing was being done for the remaining 167 cases.

CAPE TOWN -- The total number of COVID-19 confirmed cases in South Africa has risen to 2,173, up 145 from the previously reported cases, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said on Sunday. Mkhize didn't report any new deaths from the disease, with the death toll standing at 25.

The rapid rise in the confirmed cases might be the result of more tests being taken after the country rolled out mass community testing last week. The total number of tests conducted to date is 80,085, Mkhize said.

ROME -- The coronavirus pandemic has claimed 19,899 lives in locked-down Italy since the pandemic first broke out in the country on Feb. 21, according to the latest official data released on Sunday.

Speaking during a televised press conference, Civil Protection Department Chief Angelo Borrelli said that the total number of infections, fatalities, and recoveries has reached 156,363.

Sunday also saw 1,984 new active coronavirus infections, bringing the nationwide total to 102,253.
