Both the UK and the European Commission have opened anti-trust probes into whether social media giant Facebook illegitimately uses data and takes unfair advantage in areas such as online classified ads.

"The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is investigating whether Facebook might be abusing a dominant position in the social media or digital advertising markets through its collection and use of advertising data," the British authority said in a statement on Friday.

Separately, Brussels said it's also investigating whether the social media company violated EU law "by using advertising data gathered in particular from advertisers in order to compete with them in markets where Facebook is active such as classified ads."
