The Kenyan government has announced plans to conduct mass testing across the capital Nairobi, this weekend.

The testing drive comes as Kenya has seen a recent spike in new cases, after the government announced a further relaxation of protocols to combat the pandemic.

Through the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS), the government will focus its testing efforts in the capital, which has recorded a sharp rise in the number of coronavirus positive cases.

On Tuesday, Kenya's Health Ministry announced 318 new COVID-19 cases, from which 112 cases were reported in Nairobi.

NMS urged Nairobi residents to continue adhering to the set health guidelines aimed at curbing the spread of the virus.

"Remember to wash your hands, sanitize, observe Social Distance and all Covid-19 Regulations," it wrote on its official Twitter handle.

Kenya is among nine African countries to have registered more than 40,000 COVID-19 infections.
