Arsenal registered a thumping 4-1 victory over CSKA Moscow in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal on Thursday to inch closer to a semifinal berth.

Alexandre Lacazette and Aaron Ramsey scored a brace each as Arsene Wenger’s side strolled to a 4-1 lead after the first 35 minutes in the first half at Emirates Stadium. That's how the game ended.

Ramsey opened the scoring by rounding off a fine team move on nine minutes by firing Hector Bellerin's cross into the roof of the net.

However, Aleksandr Golovin leveled in the 15th minute against the run of play with a dipping, curling free-kick that flew into the top corner beyond the dive of goalkeeper Petr Cech.

Arsenal's Welsh midfielder Aaron Ramsey scores their third goal with this flick during the UEFA Europa League first leg quarterfinal against CSKA Moscow at the Emirates Stadium in London, April 5, 2018.

Lacazette, in his first start since late January, made it 2-1 for the hosts in the 23rd minute from the penalty spot after Mesut Ozil was brought down by Georgi Schennikov.

Arsenal took a 3-1 lead in the 28th minute with a spectacular goal, scored by a leaping Ramsey, who volleyed it past goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev from eight meters with the heel of his right boot.

Lacazette extended the lead to 4-1 in the 35th minute after a series of swift passes. But there wasn’t any goal scored in the second half even though Ramsey went close to his second career hat-trick when he struck the post in the 78th minute.

Thanks to their emphatic victory, Arsenal just need a draw to progress to the semifinals when they will play next Thursday's second leg in Moscow.
