Wednesday is International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the 76th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz death camp. Many Holocaust memorial services have gone virtual this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Across Europe people are remembering the 6 million European Jews and other non-Jewish prisoners murdered by Nazis between 1941 and 1945. There are nearly 240,000 elderly Holocaust survivors still alive today.

All countries in the European Union have been called upon by the president of the European Jewish Congress to ensure that the elderly Holocaust survivors are prioritized for vaccination.

Commemorative tree planting, flower laying, musical services and art installations took place Wednesday, as countries move to inoculate survivors. Holocaust Remembrance ceremonies at the Bundestag in Berlin were attended by German Chancellor Angela Merkel
