The United States is continuing with airstrikes on Islamic State (IS) targets in Syria and Iraq over the past three days, and U.S. and partner-nation military forces have launched 13 airstrikes in Iraq, a statement of U.S. Defense Department said on Wednesday.

In Syria, seven fighter and bomber airstrikes near Kobani destroyed five IS fighting positions and struck three other IS fighting positions and a large IS unit.

In Iraq, a total of 13 airstrikes have been conducted, using fighter, attack and remotely piloted aircraft. The attack destroyed six IS-occupied buildings, four IS storage containers and two IS fighting positions.

Meanwhile, the airstrikes in Iraq also struck an IS guard tower, seven IS armored vehicle, three IS bunkers and four tactical IS units.

The strikes were conducted as part of Operation Inherent Resolve, which aims to eliminate the IS terrorist group and the threat they pose to Iraq, the region and the wider international community, the statement said.

The destruction of IS targets in Syria and Iraq further limits the terrorist group's ability to project terror and conduct operations, it added.

Coalition countries conducting airstrikes in Iraq include the United States, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Netherlands and the United Kingdom, while those conducting airstrikes in Syria include the United States, Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Enditem
