Kenya's ministry of health on Friday announced 866 new COVID-19 infections from tests conducted over the last 24 hours, bringing the country's caseload to 87,249.

The ministry noted that from the new cases reported, 828 were Kenyans while the remaining 38 were foreigners.

It also announced that six patients had succumbed to the disease in the same period, bringing the cumulative fatalities to 1,506.

Kenya is one of eight countries in Africa that have recorded more than 80,000 COVID-19 infections.

It's number of infections is only shadowed by tallies registered by South Africa, Morocco, Egypt, Ethiopia and Tunisia.

The country's death toll is the sixth-highest on the continent.
