Marcos remains interred at Heroes Cemetery

The remains of former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos was interred at the Heroes' Cemetery in Manila on Friday, Philippine authorities and media reports said.

The authorities said the Marcos remains was inside a coffin draped with the Philippine flag was buried around noontime with full military honors.

The Marcos family did not announce the burial rites. News reporters and photographers were not allowed to cover the event.

Philippine National Police Director General Ronald dela Rosa told reporters outside of the cemetery's gate that the three helicopters flew the remains and some relatives to Manila on Friday from Ilocos Norte.

The authorities said the ceremony was "simple and private" that was attended only by the immediate members of the Marcos family, including Marcos widow, Imelda Marcos, and his children Imee Marcos, Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Irene Marcos.

Before the interment at the Heroes' Cemetery, Marcos's embalmed body was on display in his home city of Batac in Ilocos Norte province north of Manila, a known bailiwick of the Marcoses.

Marcos was elected in 1965, ruling the country until 1986.
