The death toll following a fire at a fireworks factory in India on Wednesday has risen to 25, officials said on Thursday.

"Of the 10 people injured in the incident, five died in hospital," Bharat Yadav, Balaghat district collector, told Xinhua. "As of now the death toll has gone up to 25."

The fire happened in the village of Khairi in Balaghat district in the state of Madhya Pradesh and caused a series of blasts inside the factory where more than 40 workers, mostly women, were on duty.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the blaze by Wednesday evening.

The five surviving workers are still being treated in hospital.

The cause of the incident is still being investigated. However initial reports point to a burning cigarette being discarded inside the building.

Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, said that each of the victims' families would receive 3,100 US dollars compensation while the injured qualify for free medical treatment.
