Two rockets fell on Monday evening in the vicinity near Israel's southern city of Eilat, Eilat's police confirmed to Xinhua.

The police said the rockets apparently hit open areas near the city, causing no damage or injuries.

Early report said several explosions were heard in the city. The spokesperson for the military said that Israeli soldiers are scanning the area for remains of the rockets.

The Israeli military believes that the rockets were fired by extreme militants situated in the Sinai Peninsula, affiliated with Al Qaida.

Meanwhile, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz quoted defense sources in Egypt as saying that the Egyptian army declared a high state of alert in the North Sinai Governate following warnings of terror attacks planned against army and border guard targets.

The warnings were received following a series of operations against terror cells in the North Sinai in recent days, said Egyptian online newspaper Al-Youm al-Saba'.

In last August, the Iron Dome anti-missile battery successfully intercepted a rocket launched towards Eilat, without any damages or injuries.

Two rockets were fired towards Eilat in April 2013, slightly damaging a residential building. Gazan militants have fired rockets and mortars at southern Israel on many occasions, leading Israeli officials to continually revamp their defense systems.
