Taiwan belongs to China and the Taiwan question is China's internal affair, Chinese State Councilor and Defense Minister Wei Fenghe said on Wednesday.

Wei made the remarks via video link during the 19th Defense Ministers' meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

China denounced and enforced countermeasures against U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan region. China's position is understood and supported by more than 170 countries and international organizations, for which China has expressed its appreciation, he said.

Wei said international society is facing multiple crises and serious challenges. It is important to unite and overcome the difficulties at this critical time. China is willing to work with other countries to maintain justice and world peace, he added.

He noted that the SCO is a model of harmonious coexistence and win-win cooperation among countries of different civilizations and political systems. Wei urges the defense departments and armies of member states to establish the concept of a community of common security, to deepen cooperation in defense and security.
