China will further promote breastfeeding to ensure the health of children and reduce environmental pressures brought by the production and consumption of breast milk substitutes, according to the National Health Commission.

Authorities will step up publicity campaigns through the internet, television, newspapers and lectures to publicize the significance of and knowledge about breastfeeding, the commission said in a recent circular.

The World Breastfeeding Week lasts from Aug. 1 to Aug. 7 each year.

Medical institutions should provide consultations and tailored guidance on breastfeeding by opening schools for pregnant women and classes for parents as well as setting up hotlines, according to the circular.

Health authorities across the country should also step up coordination with other departments to better protect the rights of nursing mothers and increase the number of child care facilities in public space and workplaces, it said.
