House Rep. Steve Scalise sustained injuries after a gunman opened fire on Republican congressmen during baseball practice on Wednesday in Alexandria, Virginia.

The assailant, who was later shot by police, was identified by law enforcement officials as 66-year-old James T. Hodgkinson from Belleville, Illinois.

He volunteered for the 2016 campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

Witnesses said the shooter inquired about which political party the players belonged to before spraying bullets indiscriminately.

However, the motive for the shooting has not been confirmed. FBI investigators said they are now examining the possibility that political reasons could be behind the incident.
