Indonesia pursues network of alleged terrorists killed in recent shootout in eastern region

The Indonesian police are intensifying efforts to pursue the racialist network of gunmen involved in a shootout with officers that killed a cop and two attackers in Sulawesi, a senior police officer said on Wednesday.

Head of Tinombala task force Senior Commissioner Leo Bona Lubis said on Wednesday that his team would investigate evidences found at the site of the deadly incident which occurred on Tuesday night in Poso, Central Sulawesi.

The shootout took place when the joint force checked a suspicious car with two passengers bringing large amount of logistics that include five sacks of rice and wheat flour and other items in a shop.

The gunmen opened fire at an approaching cop, and triggered the shootout between suspected terrorists and the officers. The gunmen were killed on the scene while a police died after being rushed to a police's hospital in the city.

The killed police, Brigadier Wahyudi Saputra, was a member of mobile police unit. He was granted a level higher rank into Chief Brigadier after his death. His body was flown back to his hometown in North Sumatra province on Wednesday after a ceremony to honor him in provincial police headquarters.

Bodies of the two gunmen were kept in police hospital for further identification process.

Poso is a hotbed for terrorism activities, with a terrorist group calling themselves as East Indonesia Mujahideen group led by Santoso remaining active there.

The group was responsible for a series of violence and killings against police in Poso in recent years. Joint efforts conducted by police and the military have been conducted to arrest Santoso and his followers, but so far the police was empty-handed. Enditem
