Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi meets Singaporean counterpart

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met his Singaporean counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan in Beijing on Sunday, as Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong is on a five-day visit to China.

The two diplomats hailed cooperative and diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Wang said it is Prime Minister Lee's second visit to China within half-year, which shows the close and friendly contact between the two countries.

Wang applauded Singapore's role in promoting regional connectivity and a good China-Singapore ties.

Balakrishnan said it has been 40 years since the late leader Deng Xiaoping visited Singapore, and the two countries have since enjoyed a strong relation.

The two should explore more opportunities in all kinds of cooperation, and Singapore wants to participate more in China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, he said.

Prime Minister Lee will meet Chinese Premier Li Keqiang on Sunday evening and the two leaders will witness the signing of two memorandums of understanding on bilateral cooperation.
