HK sees 7th student suicide in 9 days

Thecitysawanotherstudentcommittedsuicide,makingittheseventhsuchcaseinthepastninedays.

Itwasreportedthata20-year-oldfemalecollegestudent,surnamedIp,leapedtoherdeathfromaresidentialblockinTseungKwanOonSundayafternoon.Thevictim,proveddeadatthescene,wasastudentatHongKongPolytechnicUniversity.

Severalsuicidenoteswererecoveredfromherapartmentintheblock,accordingtothepolice.

Onewaswrittentothemediaandtheothersweretofamilies,localmediareported.Iprevealedthatshewasnothappyinthoseletters,accordingtothereports.

Policefoundnosuspiciouscircumstanceafterpreliminaryinvestigation.CauseofIp'sdeathwillbedeterminedafterautopsy.

ThesuicidenumberamongstudentsinHongKonghassurgedsinceSeptember,with23suicidecasesrecordeduptonow.Thenumberhasdoubledthanthoseinlastschoolyear.Thealarmingsurgehasarousedsociety’sattention.

Inaremedialresponse,theEducationBureauonThursdayannouncedfivemeasurestocopewiththeloomingcrisis,includingaspecializedcommitteetolookintothereasonsandputforwardprecautions.Areportisexpectedtobesubmittedinsixmonths.
