NEW DELHI, June 24 (APD) - The most popular number for cars in Delhi, “0001” was recently auctioned and fetched a sum of 1.6 million rupees for the government.

A private company, which works in the hospitality sector, bought the number through Delhi government’s e-auction.

KK Dahiya, special commissioner of transport in Delhi explained, “In just six months we earned Rs 5.47 million by selling 29 fancy registration numbers. Last year, we sold 151 and earned Rs 2.29 crore. The demand increases during winters and the festive season such as Diwali when car sales also peak.”

According to a report published in Hindustan Times, other car numbers that are usually auctioned and fetch government revenue are, Bond-style “0007” and “0009”. In 2015 “0007” was sold for Rs 1.04 million.

The auction for “0001” started at a price of half million, and “0002” to “0009” started at Rs 0.3 million.

“Most buyers are companies … like the one that bought the 0001. The second top bidder was a sugar company. Only nine 0001 numbers have been bought by individuals since 2014,” Dahiya said.

In 2014, the Delhi government started auctioning car numbers to generate more revenues.
