U.S. Census shows more diversity as its White population shrinks

The White population in the United States is shrinking as the country becomes more diverse, according to data from the 2020 Census.

People who identify as Asian Americans are the fastest-growing ethnic group, increasing by 35 percent to 24 million between 2010 and 2020.

The percentage of people identifying as White has fallen below 60 percent for the first time, and the number of non-Hispanic White people shrank, from 196 million to 191 million.

Among Americans under the age of 18, the percentage of non-Hispanic Whites fell from 53.5 percent to 47.3 percent. They are now outnumbered by people of color.

Hispanics now make up 18 percent of the population, up from 16.3 percent in 2010. The proportion of people identifying as Black or African American remained steady at 12.1 percent.

Census results are used to apportion seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and help determine how federal spending is distributed in the country.
