Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry next week in the Italian capital Rome, amid an upcoming Palestinian bid to the UN to demand an end to the Israeli occupation in the West Bank.

According to a statement by his office on Wednesday, Netanyahu will also meet with Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

Israeli officials confirmed that Kerry had asked to meet Netanyahu, apparently in order to coordinate the two countries' stances, as the UN Security Council will discuss a Palestinian bid urging Israel to end the occupation of the West Bank territories on Dec. 24.

In addition to the Palestinian bid, another draft proposal by France, the U.K. and Germany suggests pushing for a two-year period to reach an agreement between Israel and the Palestinian Authority.

The Palestinian Authority has been advancing moves on several diplomatic fronts in order to push Israel to retreat from the West Bank and enable the establishment of a Palestinian state.

The peace talks between the two parties collapsed in April, following the establishment of a Palestinian unity government after an agreement was reached with the Islamist Hamas movement.

In recent weeks, Sweden and the British, Spanish and French parliaments recognized the state of Palestine. Enditem
