Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who stepped back from leadership late last year to allow Democrats to shepherd in a “new generation,” announced on Friday she will seek reelection for her San Francisco House seat in 2024.

“Now more than ever our City needs us to advance San Francisco values and further our recovery,” Pelosi wrote in a social media post announcing the decision. “Our country needs America to show the world that our flag is still there, with liberty and justice for ALL. That is why I am running for reelection – and respectfully ask for your vote.”

The California Democrat, 83, was first elected to the House in 1987 and has become a towering figure in American politics as the party’s longest serving House leader and the first and only woman to be elected speaker.

Though Pelosi did not seek reelection in House leadership this year, fulfilling a pledge in 2018 to limit herself to just four more years as party leader even as Republicans gained the majority and amid calls for her to stay at the party’s helm, her future in Congress remained an open question.

Pelosi’s decision ends months of speculation about her political future, while marking a departure from other former House speakers, who have generally chosen to retire from Congress closely following their handing over of the gavel rather than remain on as a rank-and-file member.
