Second gunfight erupts in Indian-controlled Kashmir

A fierce gunfight between militants and Indian troops Sunday broke out in Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The gunfight, second in the day, took place in the evening at Ahmad Nagar-Soura locality of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"The gunfight is going on and reinforcements of Indian army and police were rushed in to take on militants present there. The details are awaited," said a police spokesman in Srinagar. "We had reports militants are present in the area and during our cordon the contingents were fired upon, triggering a gunfight."

Reports pouring in from the area said a policeman was wounded in the exchange of gunfire between two sides.

Unconfirmed reports said two militants are believed to be trapped in the area.

Police and Defense officials maintain most of the time operations triggering gunfights are carried out on prior information about the presence of militants in specific areas.

Earlier during the day two militants killed two policemen and snatched their service rifles during an attack on a National Conference worker's house at Khrew locality of Pampore, about 22 km south of Srinagar city. However the duo was killed while fleeing from spot during a brief gunfight with Indian troops.

Indian army spokesman said they recovered two assault rifles of militants besides the weapons they had snatched from slain policemen from the gunfight site.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troops stationed in Indian-controlled Kashmir since 1989. The gunfight between the two sides takes place intermittently across the region.
