New Speaker of Myanmar's parliamentary House of Representatives (lower house) U Win Myint took over the duty from outgoing House speaker U Shwe Mann Monday in Nay Pyi Taw, according to U Shwe Mann's social website.

The duty transfer, witnessed by chairperson of election-winning National League for Democracy (NLD) Aung San Suu Kyi, came after U Win Myint was elected as new House speaker at the opening of the first session of the parliament that began a new five-year term.

The newly elected U Win Myint, an NLD MP to the lower house from Pathein constituency in the last term of the parliament, was re-elected in the 2015 general election.

U Ti Khun Myat of the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) was elected as deputy speaker of the House.

The newly-elected parliament started its first session with the House of Representatives in Nay Pyi Taw on Monday, two days after the expiry of the previous term of the parliament.

The first session of the new parliament came nearly three months after the end of the Nov. 8 general election, in which the NLD, led by Aung San Suu Kyi, won an absolute majority of the parliamentary seats.

The first session of the House of Nationalities (upper house) is scheduled to start on Wednesday and will be followed by the first session of the Region or State Parliaments next week.
