TheNonsensemakerssaidontheirFacebookpageonMondaythatdepartmentstaffhadverballyrequestedthattheword“national”,bothinChineseandEnglish,notappearinthebooklet.

Thegroupsaidittriedandfailedseveraltimestochangetheirmind.

ThestaffmemberssuggestedthattheyusetheChineseversionoftheabbreviatedformoftheschoolnameinstead,whichdidnotcontaintheoffendingword.

Thebiographywasfinallychangedtoafewsentencesprotestingagainstrestrictionofcreativityandfreedomofspeech.Loappearedinapicturenexttothetextwithherdegreecertificate,whichcarriedtheuniversity’sfullname.

Thegroupsaidtheschoolnamewasabasicfactwhichshouldbepublishedinfulloutofrespectforacademiaandthearts.

TheNonsensemakerssaidtheywouldratherwithdrawtheinformationthanpublishthe“prunedpersonalintroduction”,andadded:“WedeeplyhopethatHongkongerscancontinuetoenjoyfreedomtospeakandcreate.Thisisthecorevaluewetreasurethemost.”

ThedepartmentonMondaynightgavenodirectresponseoverwhetherithadprohibitedtheuseoftheschool’sfullname.

Aspokesmansaidthedepartmentoftendiscussedthepublicationoftheprogrammebookletswithartgroups,andaddedthatitwouldlookintothiscasemorecloselyandexplorehowtostrengthencommunicationswiththeconcernedorganisationinthefuture.

SpeakingbeforetheweeklyExecutiveCouncilonTuesdaymorning,ChiefExecutiveLeungChun-yingwasaskedifLCSD’shandlingoftheissueshowedthatHongKongwasbecomingalesscivilisedplace.Inresponse,hesaidonlythatthegovernmentwasfollowinguponthematter,andthatSecretaryforHomeAffairsLauKong-wahwouldspeakonthetopiclateronTuesday.
