Taiwan has recently suffered its heaviest rainfall so far this year. At least two people have been killed and three others missing after torrential rain swept across most of the island on Friday.

The northern cities of Keelung and New Taipei City were among the worst hit areas. In just a few hours, more than 600 millimeters of rainfall landed on Sanzhi district of New Taipei City.

Local aviation authorities reported that over 300 flights were cancelled or delayed. Water leaked into Terminal 2 of Taoyuan International Airport and flooded the shopping area. Airport staff used dustpans and buckets to sluice water out of the building.

In Keelung, a six-year-old girl and her grandmother trapped in a bus station were washed away by floodwaters. The girl, who was rescued by police, was transferred to hospital. Her condition is reportedly stable and she will remain in hospital for observation.

The region's weather bureau said a southwesterly airstream will leave the island on Sunday, but the weather front will persist.
