Now that the Taliban is in control of Afghanistan, the world is watching closely to see how or if the group will transform itself from an insurgency into a government.

Afghanistan is one of the least developed countries in the world, with nearly 90 percent of its population living on less than $2 a day. The current situation has left plenty of room for a future government in Afghanistan to push forward a development-focused agenda.

Victor Gao, Chair Professor at Soochow University, discussed the development opportunities in Afghanistan and what the Taliban could do to unlock the growth potential for their country to bring benefits to the Afghan people.

The Taliban face challenges both domestically and internationally. They inherit a country struggling with drought, the coronavirus pandemic, food shortages and security.

Afghanistan is an aid-dependent country. Its overseas funds are frozen, and many aid organizations have suspended assistance in light of the Taliban takeover.

Victor Gao is calling on the international community to deal with the Afghan situation creatively to ensure the money belonging to Afghanistan can be used for emergency relief and government-to-government assistance.
