Policy towards Taiwan will not change: President Xi

(CCTV NEWS)While meeting with Shanghai lawmakers on Saturday, President Xi Jinping also talked about cross-Strait relations.

President Xi Jinping said the peaceful development of cross-Strait ties is the common wish and firm will of all Chinese people.

He said the central government should not disappoint them. Xi told the legislators that policy toward Taiwan is clear and consistent, and will not change with the change in Taiwan's political situation.

The President said the Mainland will adhere to the 1992 Consensus as a political foundation for ties.

Xi said the Consensus and its core implications are the prerequisites for a common political foundation and maintaining good interactions.

The president said the Mainland will further promote cooperation and exchanges in all fields, deepen economic and social integration, and enhance the sense of a community of common destiny.

Xi said the central government will resolutely contain "Taiwan independence" secessionist activities in any form, and will safeguard the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity. He said the central government will never allow a repeat of the historical tragedy of national secession.
